There are currently about 64 different ways to determine your gender. It takes a lot of bravery to admit that you don’t feel like the gender you were born with, which is why it’s refreshing to see more and more celebrities accept their true selves.

1. Miley Cyrus

Gender: Genderfluid

Pronouns: She/her

Miley Cyrus announced in 2015 that she doesn’t care about her gender or the gender of those around her, saying, “I don’t relate to being a boy or a girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.” Cyrus hasn’t confirmed her pronouns yet, but she seems to be adopting she/her as she has in the past.

2. Ezra Miller

Pronouns: They/them

Miller made an explosive comment in 2018: “I don’t identify as a male.” I don’t consider myself a woman. I scarcely recognize myself as a human.”

3. Laverne Cox

Gender: Trans woman

Pronouns: She/her

Cox recognized herself as a woman at a young age, saying, “I knew in my heart, mind, and spirit that I was a female.” Despite receiving little to no encouragement, her feelings never went away, and by the time she was in college, she had completely transformed into a beautiful woman. She is the first openly transgender person to earn an Emmy nomination.

4. Rose McGowan

When it comes to their sexuality, McGowan opposes the notion of gender, saying, “I don’t want to be a man or a woman, I’m not.”

The actor states that she is relaxed in her own skin and identifies with both genders: “Yeah, I feel like I’m neither. If I had to pick, I’d go with a kid, a man. I have the appearance of a child, but I don’t think I should have been born with different body parts or something. I feel like it’s all about how I dress, speak, and look and feel, and that’s what makes me happy.

6. Tommy Dorfman

Gender: Non-binary

Pronouns: They/them

“Growing up, I despised the fact that clothing was gendered,” the up-and-coming actor said in 2017. “I’m a non-binary person.” Dorfman also noticed that he feels more like a woman than a man, but he has no desire to change: “Physically, biologically, I am male, and I’ve never tried to change that.” But on the inside, I’m a lot more feminine.”

7. Indya Moore

Gender: Transgender and non-binary

Moore, despite having converted from male to female, identifies as neither, but is unconcerned about being mistaken for a woman: “I’m non-binary, but I don’t really worry about it that much.” I don’t think people are ready to accept it yet, which I don’t mind, but I am aware of how people perceive me as a woman.”

8. Sam Smith

Known for: Singer-songwriter, won an Academy Award for co-writing and performing the song Writings on the Wall for Spectre

Gender: Non-binary and genderqueer

Pronouns: They/them

Smith came out as genderqueer in 2017, suggesting that he or she identifies with both male and female genders. The singer later completed their path to their true identity in 2019 and chose to change their pronouns to them/they. “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I’ve decided to accept myself for who I am, inside and out,” they wrote on Instagram.

Nikkie de Jager, better known as NikkieTutorials, a beauty vlogger, came out as transgender in early 2020: “When I was younger, I was born in the wrong body, which means that I am transgender now.” “By the age of 6, I grew my hair out, people at my school knew… and I think by the age of 7 or 8 I totally wear girls clothes only,” Nikkie says of her mother’s early encouragement.

10. Amandla Stenberg

Gender: Non-binary

Pronouns: They/them

Stenberg is openly non-binary and a feminist, even though they are perplexed by the combination, writing, “Why do you say a feminist movement when you don’t always feel like one?” They didn’t have a preference for pronouns at first, but after some time, they realized they/them were the most relaxed.

The actress retweeted a tweet in early 2020 that celebrated being non-binary, saying, “There is absolutely nothing better than living outside the gender binary.” The actress accompanied the tweet with the hashtag #IAmNonbinary, but she didn’t say which pronouns she prefers.
