After multiple suspected motorbike thieves were discovered strapped to poles in Jalisco, Mexico, an enigmatic character known as the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno” went viral.

Photos of individuals bound with tape in public places, often next to motorcycles they were accused of stealing, started to circulate online following reports of the occurrences in Lagos de Moreno, a municipality in Jalisco.

In response to what many perceived as vigilante justice, social media users swiftly gave the unidentified individual or group the Batman moniker, and the news soon travelled over X. The individuals discovered bound are being classified as victims, according to Jalisco authorities, who are looking into the incidents.

El Financiero reports that Salvador González de los Santos, the prosecutor for Jalisco, acknowledged that there had been instances in which young men had been bound with signs alerting them to the consequences of continuing to steal motorcycles. He stated that investigators were investigating the accusations made against them, but he emphasised that “en este momento son €ctimas,” which means that they are currently victims.

The first documented case, according to Infobae reports, was on June 13 when a young guy was discovered tied to a post with visible injuries and a cardboard placard accusing him of being a “ratero,” or thief. At least five guys were discovered in identical circumstances on June 17 and June 19.

The men’s faces were marked, their lips were taped, and warning signs were positioned close by in some of the pictures that went viral online. According to local sources, some of the scenes also had motorcycles that were allegedly connected to the crimes.

The story has gone viral on social media, with English-language tweets about the “Batman of Lagos” receiving millions of impressions and thousands of likes. While some users have cautioned that the situation is an indication of frustration with crime and law enforcement, others have likened the anonymous character to a vigilante from a comic book.
