A late-night medical emergency led an Indian doctor to share a powerful perspective on the country’s healthcare system. In a now-viral Instagram video, Dr Deepanjali Sharma (Instagram: @dr_dpanjali) explained why she considers living in India a blessing, especially when it comes to quick access to medicines and treatment.
Her husband, who is also a doctor, had fallen sick with a headache and vomiting. It was around 10 pm, and she was heading out to get medicines and an IV injection for him.
Her Key Comparison
Dr Sharma said that in a situation like this, being in India felt like a major advantage. She claimed that if the same thing had happened in the UK or another Western country, even as a doctor herself, she might have faced long queues. There was also a chance that the emergency room would be too busy to attend to her husband quickly. Getting over-the-counter medication, she added, is not as straightforward in many Western systems.
“It’s 10 PM, and my husband, who is also a doctor, is sick right now. He has a headache and is vomiting. I’m out to get some medicines and IV injections. In moments like these, I realise that it’s such a blessing to be here in India because, if I were in the UK or some Western country, irrespective of the fact that I am a doctor, I might have been standing in a queue. There would have been a possibility that the ER might not have even attended to my husband, given how busy they often are. You cannot get over-the-counter medication that easily there,” she said.
She further noted that the cost would likely have been higher abroad. In India, she could simply go out late at night, buy the required medicines, and administer the injection herself.
Her Message to Those Planning to Move Abroad
Dr Sharma advised people to keep such practical realities in mind before deciding to settle overseas. She acknowledged that life in Western countries is not always “hunky-dory” and that many conveniences Indians take for granted can become struggles elsewhere.
“However, it’s not that everything is hunky-dory there. There are many processes that people in India take for granted. So, never ever feel like living in India is a disadvantage. It’s just about how you use your situation,” she concluded.
Public Reaction
The video quickly went viral and drew mixed responses. Some viewers strongly agreed with her experience of easy and affordable access to care. Others pointed out the many challenges that still exist within India’s healthcare system, including overcrowding in public hospitals, quality variations, and out-of-pocket expenses for large sections of the population.
Times Now noted that it could not independently verify the details of the post.
