A birthday dinner at a popular restaurant chain turned into a disgusting experience for a Mumbai man after he spotted cockroaches crawling on a pastry tray. The incident took place at Barbeque Nation in Virar on August 19, 2026, and a video of the discovery has since gone viral.
Yash Raut had gone to the restaurant with a group of five people and paid premium prices for the buffet. Instead of a pleasant celebration, he was left horrified when he noticed live cockroaches on the displayed pastry tray.
The Viral Video and Complaint
Raut shared the disturbing clip on X (formerly Twitter), tagging the restaurant and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). In his post, he wrote:
“COCKROACHES at @barbequenation Virar on my birthday dinner, 19 Aug, group of 5. Premium prices, zero hygiene. @fssaiindia please inspect this outlet. @Swiggy booked from your dineout.”
The video clearly shows cockroaches moving across the plate full of pastries. The post quickly gained attention, crossing over 54,000 views.

FSSAI’s Response
FSSAI replied to the complaint, advising the customer to lodge a formal complaint through the Food Safety Connect App with all relevant details for necessary action. They also directed him to contact the concerned State/UT Food Safety Authorities.
Public Reaction
The video drew strong criticism online. Many users expressed disgust and shared their own negative experiences at buffet restaurants. Some pointed out that tagging FSSAI on social media alone is not enough and advised filing a proper complaint on the official portal. Others noted that hygiene issues at popular buffet chains are not uncommon.
A few commenters mentioned having encountered similar problems at Barbeque Nation outlets in the past, while others focused on the responsibility of food delivery and dining platforms that list such restaurants.
A Recurring Concern
This is not an isolated case. Similar hygiene-related complaints against restaurants have surfaced regularly on social media, including recent incidents involving worms and other contaminants in food. Each viral video renews the debate about the gap between the premium prices charged by popular eateries and the actual hygiene standards maintained in their kitchens and display areas.
