At just a few months old, Lewis Connett was diagnosed with Apert syndrome — a rare genetic condition his family had never even heard of. The condition causes bones to fuse from birth, affecting the skull, hands and feet.

Today, at 13 years old, Lewis from Halifax in West Yorkshire has already undergone 23 surgeries. Yet his latest achievement shows that the condition does not define him.

A Lifetime of Surgeries

Lewis’s first major operation took place at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital when doctors enlarged the back of his skull to give his developing brain more space. It was a terrifying time for his parents, but the little boy recovered quickly. Since then, he has faced 22 more procedures.

Despite the long medical journey, Lewis and his family refused to let the diagnosis limit his life.

Climbing Mount Snowdon

Just months after having both feet operated on, Lewis climbed Mount Snowdon — the highest mountain in Wales. The challenge was part of a series of fundraising efforts organised by his family.

Together with his mother Donna (51), his father and older brother Hayden, they created Team Lewis Challenges. The campaign raises money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, the place that has cared for Lewis since his diagnosis. So far, the family has raised more than £80,000.

Looking Ahead

Lewis’s next surgery — a cleft palate repair — is already scheduled. His mother puts it simply: Lewis is not defined by his syndrome. He is simply Lewis — a boy who loves cricket and continues to live life to the fullest.
