Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, received a promotion to Field Marshal on Tuesday, May 20. An official statement claims that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over a cabinet meeting where the decision to promote Gen. Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) was made.

According to reports, Munir’s involvement in the most recent battle with India made him the second officer in the nation’s history to achieve this status.

In 1959, Army General Ayub Khan became the first officer to be promoted to the highest military rank in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s prime minister’s office stated,

“The Government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Gen Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the rank of Field Marshal for ensuring the security of the country and defeating the enemy based on the high strategy and courageous leadership”

Many trolls targeted Munir on the Internet as a result of the revelation, and musician Adnan Sami responded to his promotion by making fun of him in a video.

On social media, Asim Munir was ridiculed by users for “promoting himself.” This has to do with the military leader in Pakistan making decisions using the public persona of a prime minister and a government.

In an attempt to mock Asim Munir, singer Adnan Sami also posted a short clip from an old Bollywood film on X. A man is shown in the video clip speaking to animals. “I say,” he says.

“I will protect the rights of all donkeys, animals with the power vested in me”.

On X, a number of internet users expressed their thoughts regarding Munir’s promotion:

A little more than a week after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, Asim Munir was promoted. All air, sea, and ground military operations against one another were to cease.

Indians & Pakistanis aren’t one people. In any decent nation, Army Chief Asim Munir would’ve been sacked for his failures. Instead, in Pakistan, he shamelessly promotes himself to Field Marshal. A disgrace to leadership!

In response to Pakistan’s Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 against terror sites in Pakistan and PoK. In response to Pakistan’s bombardment and attacks in border regions, missile strikes were launched. Along the Line of Control (LoC), there was intense crossfire, resulting in the deaths of 35–40 Pakistan Army soldiers and 100 militants. On May 12, a ceasefire was subsequently declared to end the fighting.
