Amazon rainforests are the worlds largest rainforest comprising 40 per cent of the forest land of the world, which is seven million square kilometres of land. It provides shelter to almost 10 per cent of earth’s species, and also a major source of carbon emissions reserve (430 million tonnes of carbon emissions per year). Earth receives its 20 per cent of oxygen from Amazon rainforests only.
It has been on fire from the past three weeks and put the whole world on alarm. According to the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE), 72,000 fires have been detected since 2019. This one recorded as the massive one covering parts of states of Amazonas, Rondonia, Para and Mato Grosso. This fire is so huge and widespread that NASA’s satellites were able to detect the smoke from space.
Following the recent report of ecologist Thomas Lovejoy of National Geography, ‘ the cause behind the increase of wildfires is the deforestation and logging activities carried by human beings. Here’s are some images which shows how devastating is the fire and how nature overcome itself with that.
