A startling workplace routine that left many viewers in disbelief was revealed in a stunning video from China that is going viral on social media. The video shows workers at a Chinese company bowing down in front of their boss while chanting “loyalty” and “dedication” to him. The video, which was shot in Guangzhou, a city in the south, went viral and sparked a general discussion about the region’s toxic workplace cultures.

In what seems to be an extreme act of subservience, both male and female employees are seen in the video lying on the ground in the office corridor. “Welcome Boss Huang of the Qiming branch,” they chant. We shall never allow our work mission to fail, whether we live or die. Many onlookers were shocked by this disturbing scene and expressed shock at the staff’ harsh attitude.

The company’s legal department has disassociated itself from the incident, despite the fact that the video cast doubt on the veracity of the event, with some believing that it might have been manufactured. The legal team said that the CEO had never been involved in such an incident and that the video did not accurately depict the company’s real procedures, according to a South China Morning Post story.

The video sparked a wider discussion about the toxic workplace cultures that are frequently present in China, even if the corporation denied it. China has become known for its hard working conditions over the years, where workers are under tremendous pressure to produce and occasionally even put up with cruel and humiliating treatment.

In a different case from October of last year, a Chinese corporation came under fire for its contentious “fitness policy,” which mandated that workers walk 1,80,000 steps per day and penalised those who didn’t reach the goal. Another unsettling instance from 2020 included a business that allegedly punished staff members who failed to reach performance targets by giving them hot chilli peppers. This even required the hospitalisation of two employees.

With a degree of pressure that many would find startling and intolerable, the latest viral film demonstrates the extraordinary extent some Chinese businesses may go to in order to impose a culture of obedience and loyalty.
