Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan referred to herself as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, evoking amusement from the whole House, including Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, just days after becoming irritated at being called by her husband’s name.
The surprising turn of events led to a quick but amusing conversation between Dhankhar and Jaya Bachchan.

“Did you have a break for lunch today? Not at all? You keep taking Jairam Ji’s name because of this. Without taking his name, you cannot properly digest your food, Jaya informed Dhankar.
With graciousness, Dhankhar said, “I’ll tell you on a light-hearted note. “I had lunch with Jairam ji today instead of taking a break,” he said, adding to the house’s amusement.
“I also want to tell you that,” he stated.
The humorous conversation took place a few days after Bachchan complained to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh referring to him as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan”.
She responded, “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed,” on July 29 during House proceedings.
She expressed her worry that women would only be acknowledged by the names of their husbands, saying, “This is something new, that women will be recognised by the name of their husbands like they have no existence or achievements of their own.”

On June 3, 1973, Jaya, a prominent figure in politics and film, wed megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda are the couple’s two children. Together, the duo has acted in some films, such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Mili, Abhimaan, Sholay, Zanjeer, and Chupke Chupke.
She entered politics in 2004 and has since become a strong voice for social justice, women’s rights, and other causes.
