Two of India’s most powerful business people have seen their fortunes skyrocket in the last year. While Gautam Adani and his family’s wealth increased by 261 percent year over year to Rs 5.05 lakh crore, Kumar Mangalam Birla and his family’s wealth increased by 230 percent to Rs 1.22 lakh crore.
According to the new IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2021, Adani and Birla have risen to positions 2 and 9, respectively. Vinod Shantilal Adani, Gautam Adani’s brother and owner of a trading company in Dubai has also made the top ten list.
Mukesh Ambani richest
For the tenth year in a row, Mukesh Ambani is India’s richest man, with a net worth of Rs 7.18 lakh crore. Ambani is also the richest man in Asia at the moment, with Adani in second place. Over the last year, Adani earned Rs 1000 crore per day, making him Asia’s second-richest person for the first time.
Others in the top ten
Shiv Nadar and his family came in third place, with a wealth rise of 67 percent to Rs 2,36,600 crore. HCL became only the third Indian IT business to surpass the $10 billion sales barrier in the 12 months ending in December 2020.
Since the last list was released in 2020, Shiv Nadar’s HCL has generated Rs 260 crore each day. According to the Hurun research, “HCL’s minimal exposure to COVID-affected categories such as travel, retail, and hospitality resulted in a 67 percent gain in his wealth.”
SP Hinduja and his family dropped two spots to fourth place on the list, but their net worth increased by 53% to Rs 2,20,000 crore. LN Mittal and his family came in fifth place, with a wealth growth of 187 percent to Rs 1.74 lakh crore.
Despite arrangements inked by the Serum Institute of India (SII) to manufacture Covid-19 vaccines, Cyrus S Poonawalla and his family remained sixth on the list with a net worth of Rs 1,63,700, up 74 percent from the previous year.
Radhakishan Damani and his family’s net worth increased by 77% to Rs 1,54,300 crore. Damani and his family have maintained their position at number seven on the list. Vinod Shantilal and his family are ranked eighth on the list, with a wealth increase of 212 percent to Rs 1.31 lakh crore.
Jay Chaudhry took tenth place on the list this year. Chaudhry is the founder and CEO of Zscaler, a cloud security firm based in the United States. His net worth increased by 85 percent to Rs 1,21,600 this year, propelling him up two spots on the list.
Smita V Crishna, the third-generation Godrej heir, is India’s richest woman, while Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the richest self-made woman on the list. The list now includes 13 individuals with a net worth of Rs 1 lakh crore or more, up from five last year.
Billionaires in India
There are now 237 billionaires in India, up from 58 last year. Chemicals and Software contributed the newest entrants to the list, with 130 new entrants, while Pharmaceuticals remains number one with 130 new entrants.
In the 2021 edition of the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List, there are 47 women, up from 5 ten years before. Mumbai is the favored city for India’s wealth producers, accounting for 25% of the list, followed by New Delhi and Bengaluru.
