Hong Kong’s population density is immense and that’s why the town continues to grow upward. The majority of the population reside in skyscrapers deservedly known as cage homes. Many of us saw these massive buildings in videos, but very few people really know what’s waiting inside.

These are Hong Kong cage homes.

The average price here is about $28,570 per square meter. It’s $3,250 in Moscow for instance. Therefore social inequality in Hong Kong is very pronounced and one cage house will contain many types of apartments for people with different income levels.

There are 4 totally different types of apartments in cage houses:

1. Dorms for poor people

Over 20 per cent of Hong Kong’s population, nearly 1.5 million people, live below the poverty line. In those cage homes, there are so-called dorms for them. The dorms are rooms with within about 20 cages; each cage is about 70 in by 24 inches.

Literally, the poor live in cages where they maintain their meagre properties. Living in these dreadful conditions will still cost them around $180-200 a month. Not all of these people are unemployed, many sell things in markets or wash dishes, but they are still unable to afford better living conditions for themselves and have been living in these cages for years.

2. Communal flats for the lower class

There are special shared apartments available in cage homes for this class of people. We have a shared kitchen and toilet and 5 to 6 small rooms that can accommodate only one table and one bed. If you’re smart enough, you may also find room for a wardrobe, but people often have to hang their things right on the walls. This type of room has cost about $500 a month.

3. Tiny apartments for the youth

Starting an independent life in Hong Kong is very difficult because it costs a lot of money to rent an apartment. A 1 bedroom flat in a suburban cage home would cost you about $1,650 a month. At the same time, men’s average wage is $2,500 and women’s $1,900. That’s why youth can only afford tiny shelters for themselves, where it’s difficult to even travel. Most apartments also lack a kitchen, but these flats are often filled with numerous smart gadgets and tools, hidden closets and transformable furniture at the same time.

So-called rich Hong Kongers who have succeeded in living, renting or even owning apartments in these cage homes with kitchens and bathrooms. But these dwellings are usually extremely tiny and there are 4-5 people squeezed into about 215-270 sq ft of space.

Each member of the family does not even have his own bedroom often. That is when imaginative Hong Kongers use different tricks, such as the construction of futuristic beds, which actually serve as separate rooms.
