While travelling to the north of France to join the D-Day 80th anniversary celebrations, a 102-year-old World War II veteran passed away.
Robert Persichitti experienced a medical problem while travelling to Normandy aboard a ship. After that, he was flown to a hospital in Germany, where he tragically died.
The former member of the US Navy was a frequent visitor to D-Day commemoration sites and expressed his excitement about travelling to Normandy this year to mark the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord.
According to WHEC News 10, Persichitti, a resident of Fairport, New York State, travelled by plane to Germany accompanied by the National World War II Museum Group and his guardian, Al DeCarlo.
From there, they boarded a ship that travelled down the coast to Normandy, the site of D-Day commemoration commemorative events. According to DeCarlo, the veteran will have “no regrets” and was “at peace” when he passed away.
“The doctor was with him,” he said to 13WHAM. Not only was he comfortable, at peace, and not alone. He quietly departed after she turned on her phone to listen to his favourite singer, Frank Sinatra.
