Along with a picture of herself pleading with Lord Ganesh, Sara Ali Khan greeted her followers on Instagram with a message wishing them joy and serenity on this auspicious occasion.
The post rapidly attracted over 2,700 comments, many of which were derogatory remarks based on her religion, while others expressed support for her. Some users went so far as to declare her an excommunicated Muslim, calling her acts “Shirk,” which is a transgression in Islam. Other people merely called her names.
“You are Muslim, why do you do pooja?” questioned one user, @shahpoor.yousufzai, about her involvement in Hindu rituals. She was advised to change her last name from “Khan” to “Singh” better to reflect her activities by another user, @mohammadaref1985. She was chastised in other remarks for not following her father, the star Saif Ali Khan.
