In a strange turn of events, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the CEO and creator of Paytm, received a scam mail, ironically from someone posing as him. Sharma posted a screen grab of a WhatsApp exchange on X in which the impostor, posing as “Vijay Shekhar Sharma,” questioned Sharma, “Are you in the company now?”

However, the conversation didn’t stop there. The fraudster asked Sharma to check the company’s existing money and send a screenshot for evaluation in an attempt to obtain internal corporate information that descended into a bizarre exchange.

“How can a company check its accounts and determine how much money it has available?” The message was read.

Playing along, Sharma respectfully responded that he wasn’t on the financial team and advised the impostor to get in touch with them directly. Sharma casually provided a landline number and enquired, “Aage kya karu?” in response to the scammer’s request for the finance department’s number, which he claimed was due to a phone format problem. “What ought I to do next?”

Next, requesting that Sharma forward the “GSTSuvidha-Signed(7).exe”.exe file to the finance head, the scammer tried to send it. The impostor wrote, “Usko ye GST file share karke bolo ki ye cheque kare.” In response, Sharma stated that the file was identified as a Microsoft Windows application and did not open. The scammer became irate when informed that Windows systems are not used in the financial department. They wrote, “Arwy pagal ye videos nahi hey ye file hey,” accusing Sharma of playing the role of a middleman and causing the assignment to be delayed.

Sharma continued to play along, responding sardonically, “सर मेरा सैलरी का देख लीजिए। “हमारा अभी तक बढ़ा ही नहीं है 🙏🏻,” he joked, complaining that his own pay had not gone up. The scammer responded angrily, “Abhi taak tum mujhye wk number nahi dey aur tum mujhse expect karte ho ki tumhhari mey salary increase karduu,” still not knowing who they were really messaging.

Netizens reaction

Sharma’s public post went viral very fast, sparking a flurry of amusing online comments. Others emphasised the grave dangers of such impersonation attempts, particularly when aiming for well-known people, while several made jokes about the scammer’s confidence.
