In the middle of a busy road in Berhampur, Odisha, a young couple was attacked with bamboo sticks on Monday. A video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking indignation.
In front of shocked commuters and onlookers, two men were shown on camera violently attacking the couple. While many others seemed powerless as the assault continued, a few onlookers tried to stop it.
Although the authorities have not yet confirmed the specific motivation behind the attack, preliminary information suggests that the assault may have been motivated by old animosity.
The pair was sent to a neighbouring hospital for treatment right away. Subsequently, medical professionals verified that both patients are stable and receiving treatment.
Locals are deeply concerned about the occurrence, questioning the declining sense of public safety and the unwillingness of onlookers to intervene during such violent assaults.
The event is currently being investigated by the Baidyanathpur Police. According to officials, they are analysing the widely shared video, getting witness testimony, and attempting to locate and identify the perpetrators.
Nevertheless, no official complaint has yet been made regarding the occurrence, according to the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of the Town Police Station in Berhampur.
