A schoolboy’s simple request to Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has gone viral. The child asked him to reopen vada pav stalls in schools — and received a clear message about healthy eating in return.
The video of their interaction was shared on Instagram by actor Indraneil Anaspure.
What the Boy Asked
In the clip, the boy told Mundhe that his friends had asked him to request the reopening of their school’s vada pav stalls.
“What would you tell them if they asked you?” the boy inquired.
Mundhe’s Response
Instead of discussing the possibility of lifting the ban, Mundhe focused on the importance of nutritious food.
“Eat well, and you will have a good body and a healthy mind. Eat nutritious food,” he said. He added that oily and fatty foods may taste good but can affect children’s health.
Background of the Ban
Earlier this year, the Maharashtra FDA banned the sale, free distribution and advertising of junk food on school premises and within a 50-metre radius of schools. The restrictions cover popular snacks such as vada pav, samosas, deep-fried items, chips, cold drinks, sugary beverages, chocolates and ice cream.
The directive applies to schools across Maharashtra and is expected to affect more than two crore students. School principals and management have been made accountable for implementation. FDA inspectors are expected to visit every school at least twice a year to check compliance. Food safety licences have also been made mandatory for school canteens.

The short exchange has drawn attention because it captures both a child’s honest wish for a favourite snack and an official’s consistent message on healthier habits. While many students may miss the taste of school-time vada pav, the FDA’s stand remains focused on long-term health.
