A Hyderabad man’s simple price comparison has reignited the debate over the real cost of food delivery apps. He paid Rs 230 for a meal at a restaurant but found the same items listed for Rs 436 on Swiggy — nearly double the price.

The Price Breakdown
At the restaurant, the bill for three items (including taxes) came to Rs 230:
- Neyyi Kaaram Onion Dosa – Rs 104
- Neyyi Pongal – Rs 85
- Filter Coffee – Rs 28
- Total before GST: Rs 219.04 → Rs 230 after tax
On Swiggy, the same (or similar) items were listed as:

- Neyyi Pongal – Rs 115
- Special Filter Coffee – Rs 120
- Total before any coupon or discount: Rs 436
The difference of more than Rs 200 for essentially the same food quickly caught attention online.

Users were divided. Many felt that visiting the restaurant is clearly more economical when travel costs and time are considered.

“Cost of eating at restaurant + transportation is lesser than doing it on online delivery platforms. It is financially more healthy to just visit good restaurant nearby.”
Others defended the higher online prices, pointing out that delivery platforms and delivery partners need to earn money.
