Every day, we hear new stories about individuals, cultures, and the general public being treated insensitively. Even revered institutions have been known to bear the brunt of it due to no fault of their own.
Take, for example, Sweden’s Lund University, which has long been mocked in India due to its moniker. ‘Lund’ means ‘green field’ in Swedish. They’ve had their fill, though.
They discussed the relentless harassment in a Facebook post, saying that removing all of the troll mail they get is a difficult job. Despite being one of the top 100 universities in the world.
The post went viral, prompting a barrage of angry rebukes directed at the perpetrators of this ineffective trolling. Many people chastised their fellow citizens for the obnoxious and disrespectful trolling directed at a school.
You know a newer sub-generation of desis has joined the social media zeitgeist when you see the same old "hardik going to lund university" joke being thought of by some new people for the first time. It's less annoying than the repetitive biryani tropes.

Lund University, one of the top 100 in the world, has had enough of Indians on Facebook.

Poor guys. While desks may continue laughing at the name, @lunduniversity is quite an amazing place. I'll vouch for @andreasmattsson and his team any day. https://t.co/H9X2fonIvj

Swedan, one of the most highly developed State and also gracious to urge both the developing nations to stop writing such idiotic comments on their Lund University Website.https://t.co/KCTf904l2q pic.twitter.com/b2hK99N3KV
Their university’s Facebook page seems to be down after the story went viral.
While it may seem to be all fun and games at first, issues like these may become major problems as they begin to impact people’s access to quality education and the image we project as a society. It would be a shame if they deleted an application by accident, assuming it was just more spam.
