Man Walks Thousands of Miles to Collect Stray Dogs and Rehome Them in Mexico

I was driving out of the tiny Mexican town of Mazunte, Oaxaca, a couple of months ago, when I noticed a curious sight on the roadside. A man pushed a trolley up the road surrounded by dogs. His trolley had dogs on top. Behind him were dogs, before him and by his side. Tails wagged wildly, barks sounded and he just kept moving his trolley through the wind.

That’s an Edgardo Perros tale. He has spent 14,000 km walking across Mexico’s perimeter rescuing wounded and sick puppies! He has saved almost 500 dogs in the last six years. So striking was his humility and compassion for all beings that it touched me. For example, when he finds a dog that’s too wounded to be saved, he’s lying down on the road with it so it has company as it goes on.

Edgardo Perros walks the entire circumference of Mexico while driving a chariot with dogs and supporting those in need along the way.

“No-one supports stray dogs on the roads. This is where I have seen their pain, “said Edgardo, 49,

“The battered, hurt, or abandoned dogs are not the ones that hurt me the most. It is the person who does it.

“I think what someone needs in this situation, no matter whether a person or an animal, is a company and even a bit of love”.

He has rescued and successfully rescued almost 500 sick and wounded dogs over the last six years.

He has walked almost 14,000 km across Mexico to date. He has just 1,432 km left to fly to get to his destination.

Edgardo has three dogs of his own who were by his side from the start of his journey 6 years ago
