A simple greenhouse in Nepal has become one of the most talked-about structures in the country after it stood firm while the surrounding area was reduced to mud and debris during the catastrophic flash floods of August 26, 2026. Spine-chilling videos showed the house remaining intact as floodwaters destroyed almost everything around it.
One of the residents, Laxmi Pandey, has now shared a harrowing account of what the family endured that day. She described their survival as “a second birth.”
The Terrifying Moments
According to Pandey, six people were trapped inside the house before being rescued by neighbours. She and her husband were at their shop, about five minutes away, when the disaster struck. They rushed back to save her mother-in-law and daughter.
“I told my mother-in-law, ‘Mummy ji, a flood is coming, we should run, let’s leave quickly.’ My mother-in-law said, ‘No, such a huge disaster has never happened here before, it won’t reach us.’ But right at that moment, the old bridge broke, and water gushed over from above. I told her, ‘Look, it’s coming from there, now we won’t be able to run,’” Pandey told ANI.
With no chance of escape, her husband, father-in-law, and a neighbour rushed into the house as the floodwaters surged in. The entire group was forced to move upstairs.
Comparing It to the 2015 Earthquake
Pandey said the force of the water shaking the house felt similar to the massive 2015 earthquake that hit Nepal.
“It felt just like the massive shaking during the 2072 earthquake (in the Nepali calendar). The strong floodwaters from both sides were shaking our house violently,” she recalled. The collapse of a neighbouring house made the fear even worse. “There seemed to be no chance of survival. But a few neighbours risked their own lives and came together to rescue us.”
Feeling Lucky and Grateful
Reflecting on how their house survived while so many others were destroyed, Pandey said she now sees it as an act of divine grace.

“Now we all feel very lucky. It is by God’s grace. Those four or five people came like manifestations of God to save us. We are thanking God right now. We have been granted a second life.”
All six people who were inside the house at the time survived unharmed.
The Larger Tragedy
The flash floods that struck Nepal have left a heavy toll. As of August 31, the death toll had risen to 939. Around 3,925 people remain missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). This includes 592 foreign nationals.
Rescue operations continue in several districts, including Rasuwa and Nuwakot. The Indian Embassy in Nepal has issued guidelines for identifying the mortal remains of Indian citizens who lost their lives, asking relatives to help through photographs or DNA profiles.
