In the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, all-rounder Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka was controversially dismissed after being timed out against Bangladesh. We examine the official regulations that led to his termination in New Delhi.

Time Out Rule in Cricket

40.1.1 The next batsman must be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within three minutes of the wicket falling or the batter retiring unless time has been called. The batter who enters will be timed out if this condition is not met.

40.1.2 If there is a prolonged wait during which no batter reaches the wicket, the umpires will follow Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match) as their method. According to the rule, the action will begin when the three minutes mentioned above have passed.

Updated on September 2022 by ICC: Arriving batter prepared to face the ball: In Tests and ODIs, an entering batter must now be prepared to take a strike within two minutes, while in T20Is, the present 90-second standard is still in place.
