A good film is a separate art form. There are plenty of exquisite pictures nowadays that are easily forgotten, and films that throw us for a loop and remove all our expectations are a treasure.

1. The Others (2001)

In this film, Nicole Kidman, who plays a young woman named Grace, moves to an island and resides in a large isolated house with her two photosensitive kids waiting for the Second World War. Their lives already have many peculiarities as Grace begins to realize that they are possibly not the only inhabitants of the house. This film reminds us that fancy special effects are not necessary for a thriller to be gripping.

2. Mulholland Drive (2002)

Mulholland Drive is a mystifying tale about a girl who, after a car crash, loses her memory and decides to try to reconstruct the details of her life and unravel the mysteries of her past which constantly haunt her. The deeper she walks, the darker the plot becomes. The movie keeps you in suspense until the very end, which incidentally will strike even the most sophisticated audience.

3. Cloud Atlas (2012)

A 2012 picture filmed by 3 incredibly talented filmmakers— Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis — has a stunning collection of six different stories, spanning many periods from the 19th to the 24th centuries that intertwine in the most unexpected way. 5. Get Out (2017)

This twisted nightmare of high tension starts very normally— a young black boy comes to meet his girlfriend’s parents— nothing causes trouble, but the story unfolds in an unpredictable manner once the boy discovers the real reason for this invitation. 6. Ex Machina (2014)

This sci-fi movie has a classic plot which involves a scientist and his creation. An experiment which has 2 participants — a young engineer, Caleb, and the first artificial intelligence in the world, Ava. But it seems the researchers have more questions than answers. In fact, Caleb falls in love with Ava during the study, and Ava is conspiring with the robot housekeeper. And the film has not exactly a happy ending.

7. Arrival (2016)

But that innocent game soon becomes very alarming.
