Online users are sharing a video of an Indian guy requesting that Selena Gomez, an American singer and actress, shout “Jai Shree Ram.” Many devotees use the phrase, which is a popular Hindu mantra that means “Victory to Lord Ram,” to show their devotion.
Selena Gomez is seen posing for a video with the Indian man, who introduces her to the well-known slogan, in the brief clip that is currently trending on social media. The speaker instructs Gomez to repeat the phrase as a question, “Say Jai Shree Ram.”
The speaker reiterates, “Say, Jai Shree Ram,” referring to it as “India’s best slogan.” Instead of responding, Gomez smiles and says, “Thank you, honey,” to her Hindu fan.
Photographer Pallav Paliwal posted the footage to Instagram first, writing: “On the occasion of Diwali, one of our followers met Selena Gomez and she said ‘Jai Shri Ram.'”
Despite Paliwal’s assertion that the footage is current, Selena’s attire, jewellery, and haircut all suggest that the event happened at last year’s Cannes Film Festival in France.
“A humiliation”:
The video has received thousands of views on social media as it has progressively gone viral, moving from Instagram to X. However, the majority of responses were unfavourable, with several individuals describing it as “embarrassing.”
One user commented on Instagram, “This is embarrassing because I’m a Hindu.” Another said, “I feel ashamed for him.”
“We don’t need needless outside approval for our faith. An Instagram user remarked, “Stop embarrassing yourself and us with you,” joining dozens of others who believed that India doesn’t require approval from outside sources.
With the caption, “A Hindu man met Selena Gomez and asked her to chant “Jai Shree Ram,” but she ignored him,” the video was also posted on X.
An X user said, “I don’t know what people get by embarrassing themselves.” “So ‘Namaste’ isn’t how we greet each other anymore,” someone else pondered.
