While presenting the award for Best Song in a Motion Picture at the 2023 Golden Globes, Ortega excitedly mentioned artists like Taylor Swift and Rihanna competing for the award, pronouncing Rihanna’s name as ‘Ree-an-nah,’ which caught the attention of keen-eyed TikToker @sugeneshin_.
@sugeneshin_ realized they had been mispronouncing RiRi’s name all along, a sentiment echoed by others in the comments. However, Fenty Beauty, Rihanna’s makeup brand, confirmed Ortega got it right, commenting that “Miss Wednesday understood the assignment.”
Rihanna herself also verified Ortega’s pronunciation as correct, stating that ‘Ree-an-nah’ is the right way. Some viewers were shocked to learn they had been mispronouncing Rihanna’s name, while others insisted they had been saying it correctly all along, reflecting differing pronunciations across regions.
Many Brits affirmed they already pronounced Rihanna’s name the same way as Jenna’s, indicating regional variations in pronunciation.
