Going through the resume of an applicant and getting a regular interview with them in today’s world is not enough in the quest for the perfect employee. That’s why employers have to use certain tricks and most of them are so easy that one of these psychological tests might fail by an applicant and not even recognize the test itself.
1. You are offered a cup of coffee for a reason.
The “coffee cup” test has recently become more popular among employers. The boss takes the applicant to the kitchen at the start of the interview and gives them a cup of coffee. The employer watches carefully what the candidate will do with the cup after the interview— they’ll ask where to put it, they’ll just leave the cup on the table, or they’ll wash it in the kitchen on their own.
Head of the accounting software development company “Xero Australia,” Trent Innes, who created this method, says this trick speaks volumes about the character and manners of a person, more than their answers to the actual questions of the interview. It can also demonstrate how quickly the candidate fits into the team. In this case, the best decision is to go to the kitchen after the interview and wash your own cup.
2. The boss deliberately keeps you waiting.
The “coffee cup” check, in reality, is an innocent trick. If the interview is scheduled for 9 a.m., the situation can be much worse, but when the applicant arrives early in the workplace, the boss is still busy and the job seeker has to wait 10 minutes. And another ten minutes later. And another 15 minutes later.
This trick will demonstrate how emotionally stable the candidate is in stressful situations and how much, in general, they want to get that role.
3. The interviewer suddenly starts to shout.
Another way to model a stressful situation and a chance to check the candidate’s ability to resist stress is to raise their voice, scream, and even use insulting words. Experts advise you to stay calm and respond as calmly as possible to these questions.
4. The interviewer makes a strange request and asks you to jump out the window.
Another unexpected surprise may be hidden behind an excentric advertisement for a job seeker— like jumping out of the window, for instance. In this scenario, the employer would like to see the potential of the employee to think “out of the box.”
Out of this scenario, you can use the following way: get on the windowsill, then fall on the floor of the room where the interview takes place. Where to stop, no one explained. Or you can surprise the boss with a win-win alternative by asking the counter-question: “How will my jump help the company?”
5. The employer suddenly starts to behave in a weird way.
Another trick is when the interviewer suddenly begins to behave. The interviewer may ignore the candidate, either by looking at their computer screen or by responding to a phone call and leaving the room in the middle of the interview.
This trick can show how the candidate will re-focus the attention of the interviewer or how they will use this situation to get out of it. One of the most effective options is to ask the interviewer for another day to reschedule the interview.
6. The candidate is introduced to the whole team.
The supervisor can give the applicant an opportunity to communicate after the interview with their future colleagues. It can be in or after work in the classroom. This isn’t a mere polite gesture — it’s the way the employer figures out the candidate’s opinions about their workers.
7. The boss drops their pen on the floor.
One measure that can help the employer recognize sensitive and friendly applicants is to drop a pen and watch the reaction of the applicant. If the applicant bends down automatically and picks up the pen, they are likely to be hired for the job. If the applicant allows the interviewer to do so, they are not likely to do so.
