Imagine you’re in a restaurant waiting for your food when a dolled-up monkey appears at your table. Do you think you’d be surprised? A Japanese restaurant, believe it or not, used monkeys as servers. And how much did they get paid? The monkeys completed their task and were rewarded with bananas. The charming Macaque monkeys would bring beer and other delightful dishes to the table at the Japanese eatery Kayabukiya Tavern, dressed in chequered shirts and black skirts. And pleased guests would occasionally tip them with boiled soya beans.

The monkeys were basically Kaoru Otsuka’s pets when he owned the eatery. They would make mistakes, of course, but their naivety would soften the hearts of the customers. They were also very well-behaved children who were well-cared for by the personnel. The restaurant’s unusual concept would draw diners from all around the world, who would interact with the monkeys and take photos with them. The monkeys not only provided food and drinks to the guests, but they also brought towels for hand washing.

They danced a lot to keep the guests entertained.

The monkeys are as close to owner Otsuka as her family, she told the Daily Mail. They would occasionally dance to delight the guests. Simply sitting at the café and watching them frolic was a truly delightful experience. The guests were able to not only dine at this restaurant, but also create fantastic memories, thanks to the small monkeys. Kayabukiya Tavern, according to reports, closed its doors a few years ago. However, the monkey concept it introduced continues to amaze us.
