Rather Than Covering Grey Roots, Hairdresser Makes Clients Embrace It With Powerful Transformation

It all started three years ago. A woman came into the California salon of colourist Jack Martin and told him she has been dyeing her hair every 3-4 weeks from grey to brown with at-home box colour. But more sometimes, she didn’t want to think about her hair colour; she retired, loved the great outdoors, and decided to save as much time as possible.

Jack Martin accepted the challenge, and the ideas bounced immediately. Eventually, the two of them decided to dye their hair silver, which would give a slightly more polish to their natural grey hue, which would allow the woman to visit salons less. She loved results when everything was said and done. So did Martin. He was in fact so pleased with the work that he posted on Instagram the transformation. And people were listening. The image went viral, bringing similar requests to Martin’s clients.

“My clients come in two or three times a year with naturally grey hair, instead of every few weeks,” Martin told Allure. Highly appealing is the ease that comes with such a beautiful look, not to mention the positive feelings that come with owning your naturally grey hair. Martin usually conducts these transformations in a ten-hour period.

The process starts with the use of a colour extractor to remove any remaining artificial colour as he explained on Instagram. Then Martin bleaches the rest of the head while preserving the grey roots, to prepare hair for the new silver colour.

Then comes the decisive part. Martin bases the new colour on the natural grey pattern of the hair. He even asks clients to come in with three to four inches of their grown-out roots, so he can analyze their hair’s natural colouring. Then he re-creates the pattern all over the hairdo.

“Most of the customers have salt and pepper in the front and the back is darker so I match that and add some darkness to that,” Martin said. And just like that, customers leave his salon about ten hours later, enjoying the blend of their natural hue.
