Traditionally, domestic violence has been perceived as an issue that mostly affects women. However, there has been a concerning rise in recent years in India of spouses being subjected to physical, emotional, and verbal abuse by their wives. Additionally, a large number of them are publicly voicing their claims of abuse at the hands of their partners. However, in severe instances, this kind of abuse has resulted in men taking their own lives.

In a similar vein, TCS engineer Manav Sharma, who lived in Agra, recently died. He conveyed his feelings about how no one listens to men and their feelings in a heartfelt video that he left behind. In the tragic video, Manav had a dupatta around his neck, one end of which was attached to the fan. Nikita Sharma, his accuser,
Social media users are sharing a video of a deceased engineer’s wife:
Since her husband’s suicide, Nikita Sharma, the wife of Manav Sharma, has been in the news. She is being accused of torturing her husband by a large number of individuals on social media. Her video, in which she admitted to cheating, has now gone popular on social media. In the video, Nikita can be seen reading from a paper while dressed in black. She admitted that she had not told Manav about the personal relationship, even though she had told him about her affair. She said:
Mai ne *** bhi kiya hai, mai ne Manav ko Abhishek ke baare mein bataya tha par hua hai yeh nahi bataya. Yeh shaadi ke baad bataya, vo bhi uske kayi baar puchne par.

In the video, she also said that she had made many mistakes and lied to him because she thought it would ruin their marriage. Nikita continued by saying that Manav Sharma had never hurt her, even though their marriage had been through a lot. She stopped communicating with all of her former men after they were married. It was reported that she said:
Itna sab hone ke baad bhi Manav ne mere par kabhi haath nahi uthaya. Mai usse bahut pyaar karti hoon. Meri galati ke badale vo mujhe jo bhi punishment dega vo mujhe manjoor hoga, kyunki haan mai ne galati ki hai bahut badi. Uske baar baar puchne ke baad bhi, but vo mera past tha, Manav ke sath rahe ke mai ne kisi ladke ko kabhi dekha bhi nahi hai. Na hi ab kisi or ko lana chahti hoon.
“What a brave girl to open about her past and it was the man who was weak to not hane and took such step.” Right? Indian parents are raising ‘Heeramandi’ material these days, not wife-material. Reality is, the past will always matter. If it didn’t matter, then why do girls hide it?

What was the response of online users to her video?
Nikita Sharma’s video went popular on social media right away after it was released and became a hot topic of conversation. Some criticise her for ruining an innocent life, while others applaud her for speaking up and revealing the truth. Here are a few of the causes:

The same factors made Atul Subhash’s case popular in the past:
In the meantime, we have heard of such cases before. Nikita Singhania previously played a similar role in a well-known case involving the suicide of her estranged husband, 34-year-old software developer Atul Subhash. Subhash was found dead on December 9, 2024, in his flat. He left behind a lengthy 24-page statement and a 90-minute video accusing Nikita and her family of harassment before he passed away. He said that they exploited the law to hurt him and demanded ₹3 crore in exchange for his consent to a divorce.
After that, Nikita Singhania, her mother, and her brother were all taken into custody on suspicion of aiding and abetting Subhash’s suicide. They were later granted bail by a Bangalore civil court.
Atul Subhash’s case has sparked a lot of discussion about potential biases in India’s marriage law system, just like Manav Sharma’s case did. The necessity of a more equitable approach to addressing grievances from both parties was also underlined by many.
