Where is it all headed, whether it be a Sabyasachi Mukherjee or a Tarun Tahiliani, whether it be the grandeur or the mix of cultures that are reflected in the clothing made for Indian cinema? In Mughal-E-Azam, Madhubala wore the classic Anarkali outfit, while in DDLJ, Kajol effortlessly wore a white knotted top with a short white skirt. All of these outfits are deeply ingrained in our recollections and instantly come to mind in response to any minor provocation. Where are these outfits going, though? Where do they go?

1. They Are Put In Petis/Boxes

Yes, all of the costumes are properly packed in trunks once the movies have been shot and viewed. Designers claim that once the movie is aired, they typically have no control over where the outfits are worn. With the film, their work essentially comes to an end. The costumes are frequently maintained with the production companies, and stored in labelled trunks. Additionally, the rights to the costumes are not even provided to the designer unless they are a top-tier designer.

These clothing are then kept in sizable boxes when a movie’s production is complete, labelled with the title of the film, and shipped to studios.

Akshay Tyagi says

We never know which costumes will be needed for which projects, thus the costumes are packed. Producers use this inventory to determine whether any of the project’s designers can utilise it.

He also mentioned

To control costs and keep within the budget for major requirements, a lot of inventory was employed in Race 3’s larger sceneries and songs. The inventory came from Race, the preceding film in the series.

There were several action scenes in the film Bang Bang, and outfits were created for them that were later reused in another production to prevent waste.

In their movies, celebrities occasionally have to don bulky costumes. Anushka Sharma is a prime example, as she wore a 35-kilogram Bombay Velvet gown. It turns out that even high-end celebrity designers, like Manish Malhotra, Anju Modi, etc., take the costumes they create for a particular movie home, as was the case with Anushka’s emerald gown.

2. Celebrities Take Them Home… Sometimes!

As I mentioned, occasionally performers will carry the costume with them, with the production company and the designer’s approval. Actors like to keep the costume with them if it has attracted a sizable fan base for the character. They occasionally save their costumes as mementoes or use them to promote the movie. Of course, some designers choose to keep the garments as a memento.

Akshay says

“I merely assist in gathering the necessary goods; whether the actor chooses to take them is up to the producers and clients.”

One of Deepika Padukone’s most intense performances was as Naina in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The actress brought her on-screen glasses home with her. Even after his film career, Rishi Kapoor enjoyed collecting sweaters.

3. Costumes Are Also Auctioned

Sometimes actors elect to auction off the costumes, and occasionally even the movie props are sold at auction. The proceeds from auctions are typically contributed to a charitable trust and used to further a cause. The actors have auctioned their clothing in order to raise money, as shown with Madhuri’s revealing yellow Dhak Dhak sari and Kareena’s Fuschia-pink Halkat Jawani sari. Naturally, Pooja Bhatt then had Sunny Leonne’s underwear, which the femme fatale had invested so much time and effort into for Jism 2, auctioned off.

Even the pricey costumes for Aishwarya and Rajinikanth’s film Robot were sold at a high price at an auction, with all proceeds going to charity.

4. Revamped And Reused

Designers take the utmost care while updating and recycling clothing. Unless Sunny is in the front and there are only a few guys watching the film, it is impossible to simply make Deepika wear a gown that Katrina wore in another movie. Putting jokes aside, designers recycle clothing but cover it up so no one can tell.

In order to prevent the internet from being overrun with comments and memes about the actresses and designers that reused their clothes, they combine and contrast the lehengas and dupattas to make them all appear completely unique.

5. They Are Usually Rented

There are hierarchies in Bollywood, however, they are not obvious. Maybe not for the top-tier actresses, but frequently, production companies take the clothes for rent and return them to the firms that had hired them after the movie is finished. This definitely isn’t the case for Bollywood’s flamboyant top-rated actresses and fashion designers.

Theirs will likely just be put in cases and forgotten until no one can remember when.
